I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's nothing like riding bikes around to feel like a local and get right to the dirty heart of a place. My other old NY room mate, Michael, cycled over to Kristin's and we set off to hire some bikes for our expedition. No one had a bike small enough for Jed and just when we had exhausted every option K got to work with some of her sassy New York attitude and talked the bike shop guys into selling us a new kids bike then buying it back for slightly less when we were done!!! Much to our amazement (and delight) they agreed!! We peddled off eagerly through industrial Brooklyn, round the shipyards, down the ancient cobbled streets of DUMBO arriving at the new parkland developments under the bridge and overlooking Manhattan in all it's dazzling, expansive glory. We stopped for pizza at lunch time, after which time Michael had to leave us, then we rode further along thewhere East River to where we could see the statue of liberty on the glistening harbour and look back at the city and see the very bottom of the island. Such a unique and special view of Manhattan. Kristin rode back through the suburban streets of Brooklyn, with her trail of helmetted Aussie ducklings sticking very close behind her.
She then prepared us a nourishing dinner of soup and (yes you guessed it) kale salad which everyone scoffed and loved. What a gal!!
