Our second day with Nok and Noi was much slower then our trek adventure. Meals always take some time so it's a good time to chat with other travelers. We met a lovely couple from northern NSW who were traveling with their bright, bubbly 12 year old girl and the kids hit it off immediately. They set about making a horror movie together (as you do), making use of the creaky bamboo doors on the huts. So "creaky creek" (coined by Jed) went into production immediately. It occupied them for the morning which was lucky because we had scheduled crossbow making and there seemed to be some confusion as to who was doing this and what materials they would be using. Someone had set off into the jungle earlier in the morning to find the right type of crossbow wood and he seemed to be taking some time. Noi was darting about saying "sorry sorry" which he seemed to say quite a lot even when it didn't appear to be required.
When production wrapped crossbow making commenced and Jed sat with a villager for hours while he carved, make rope, triggers arrows and all the other things required for a cross bow. There was lots of chiselling with machetes and Jed was in his element. Legend had it that the cross bow maker could make ANYTHING including gun powder so he became somewhat of a hero. The final product was in fact a lethal weapon that shot sharpened bamboo spears at such a rate could hardly see them. I spent the rest of the afternoon following Jed around to make sure he didn't accidentally kill anyone. No body seemed that worried that a nine year old was running around with a deadly implement but when I suggested it was rather dangerous they said that yes it could kill so he must shoot it into the ground and not in the air. Not that comforting really. I was imagining our own real life horror show but am pleased to report there were no injuries.
